Walsers Machine uses the same setting, its events occurring in parallel, placing Joseph Walser, a machinist, into a position where he struggles to find some order in the chaos. There is some very strong commentary on how individuals find interior calm within peripheral madness, whether it's the struggle of daily life in monotony, or the threat of death at the hands of an invading army - Tavares balances the two well, displaying them in parallel. I am, however, concerned that Tavares is weaving a post-modernist tale of humanity gradually learning to accept and adopt its evolutionary rawness; that the relinquishing of conscience and morals is the only thing that makes sense in the face of our depravity, and it's actually the next step in our progression.

the third book of gonçalo tavares' acclaimed kingdom series (aka the "black books") to appear in english translation (after jerusalem and learning to pray in the age of technique), joseph walser's machine (a máquina de joseph walser) explores the monotonous, ordered life of its eponymous protagonist, a factory machinist in an unnamed city on the cusp of war. presumably, the ten books that make up tavares' neighborhood series (o senhor valéry, o senhor calvino, o senhor brecht, o senhor breton, et al) will also find their way into wide-release translation (it appears texas tech university has secured the rights to at least half of these ten titles). curiously, this is the third translator employed by dalkey to undertake the task of rendering tavares into english, following anna kushner (jerusalem) and daniel hahn (learning to pray in the age of technique).
